About Diecast Cars

Diecast cars are a field of collecting all their own, whether it's Hot Wheels or 1:18 scale replicas. Beginning in the late 1970s and through current day, thousands of different diecast toys and collectibles resembling Hot Wheels, Matchbox and Johnny Lightning produced dozens of varieties of 1:64 scale Mustangs from diecast metal. In 1:18 scale diecast collectible models you can likely find your favorite year Mustang in your favorite exterior color with your favorite wheels with little effort. While the focus of this site is the vintage period, where tin, pressed steel and plastic ruled, there are some very nice examples of miniature Mustangs produced from diecast that we'll include here.

The Cars

Model: Lane Collectables' 1966 Shelby G.T.350S

Scale: 1:18

Description: Part of Lane Collectables' Exact Detail Series is this replica of an actual factory supercharged Shelby (No. 6S051). The die-cast replica was the result of "thousands of hours of research and development," according to the manufacturer. Judging by the detail of the interior and the engine compartment, it's not difficult to believe there is truth to that statement. This limited edition car was released in 2000.

Model: Precision 100 1965 Mustang Convertible

Scale: 1:18

Description: Arguably the best 1:18 scale die-cast Mustang ever produced is this limited edition Mustang convertible, part of a series honoring Ford's 100th anniversary. The model was produced in red, white and blue. Details include carpeting, cloth seat belts, wired wheel covers, sliding antenna, detailed underside with spinning driveshaft and working suspension, and an engine compartment correct right down to the factory stickers in the engine bay.

Model: Ertl Wix Boss 302

Scale: 1:24

Description: Offered as part of a mail-in promotion from Wix Filters in 1996 was this limited edition 1:24 scale heavy die-cast 1966 Ford F100 pickup truck bank with plastic trailer and a die-cast 1969 Boss 302 bank.

Model: Matchbox 1967 Mustang GT Fastback (No. DY016/D-M)

Length: 4.5 inches

Description: Part of the Matchbox Collectibles series was this 1967 Mustang GT Fastback with lettered tires, a beige interior, red exterior and white GT stripes. This particular model was produced in 1995 and came, like the other Matchbox Collectibles models, in a special commemorative box. This car is no longer produced by Matchbox.

Model: Dinky 1967 Mustang Fastback (No. DY-16)

Length: 4.5 inches

Description: Dinky, a divison of Matchbox, produced this die cast car with black interior in 1990. It's unclear which geographic market Matchbox was targeting with these cars.

Model: Dinky 1967 Fastback (No. DY16-B)

Length: 4.5 inches

Description: The second Dinky Mustang produced was this white Mustang with a red interior. It was released in 1992 and was identical to the green car at left except for the colors.

Model: Limited Edition Muscle Machines 1966 Mustang Fastback (No. 71165)

Length: 10 inches

Description: Muscle Machines 1:18 scale diecast Mustang Fastback features oversized engine with blower and "real steel braided fuel lines," free-wheeling rubber tires over mag wheels, and bronze paint with dual black stripes. There were 5,800 of these models produced. Similar models were produced in 1:64 scale.
