By the time the late 1970s rolled around, plastic and die-cast cars began their rule that has lasted to present day. Tin and pressed steel toy cars were fading into history thanks to the higher production costs. Another factor was safety. Children were cutting themselves on the sharp edges of the tin cars, creating legal headaches for manufacturers. While the end of the tin toy era was a sad passing, there have been some nice examples of miniature Mustangs produced from other materials, especially die-cast. There have been literally hundreds of die-cast Mustangs produced, mostly 1:18 scale, but I will only feature a few of the best examples here.

Arguably the best 1:18 scale die-cast Mustang ever produced is this limited edition 1965 Mustang Convertible. Part of a series honoring Ford's 100th anniversary, the car was produced in red, white and blue. Details include carpeting, cloth seat belts, wired wheel covers, sliding antenna, detailed underside with spinning driveshaft and working suspension, and an engine compartment correct right down to the factory stickers in the engine bay. Part of Lane Collectables' Exact Detail Series was this 1:18 scale 1966 Shelby G.T.350S, a replica of an actual factory supercharged Shelby (No. 6S051). The die-cast replica was the result of "thousands of hours of research and development," according to the manufacturer. Judging by the detail of the interior and the engine compartment, it's not difficult to believe there is truth to that statement.

Part of the Matchbox Collectibles series was this die-cast 4 1/4-inch 1967 Mustang GT Fastback (No. DY016/D-M) with lettered tires, a beige interior, red exterior and white GT stripes. This particular model was produced in 1995 and came, like the other Matchbox Collectibles models, in a special commemorative box. This car is no longer produced by Matchbox.

Dinky, a divison of Matchbox, produced this 4 1/4-inch die-cast 1967 Mustang Fastback (No. DY-16) with black interior in 1990. It's unclear which geographic market Matchbox was targeting with these cars.

The second Dinky Mustang produced was this white 1967 Fastback (No. DY16-B) with a red interior. It was released in 1992 and was identical to the green car at left except for the colors. Offered as part of a mail-in promotion from Wix Filters in 1996 was this limited edition 1:24 scale heavy die-cast 1966 Ford F100 Pickup Truck bank with plastic trailer and a die-cast 1969 Boss 302 bank.
